Quality Engineer
Midland Manufacturing is a leading manufacturer of loading valves, pressure relief valves and level gauges for the railroad tank car, marine barge, and ISO storage container markets in North America. Midland is searching for a Quality Engineer to improve internal performance and drive results as we strive to improve the performance and functionality of our business. This individual will be an active and key member of the Midland team and have an integral role in driving changes through the Quality and Manufacturing Departments. The Quality Department is cohesive, driven and always looking for better ways to do things. The Quality Engineer will immediately contribute to the organization in the following critical areas:
Responsibilities:
- Analyze statistical data and product specifications to determine standards and establish quality and reliability objectives of finished product.
- Apply statistical methods and perform mathematical calculations to determine manufacturing process capabilities.
- Resolve root cause, non-conforming material issues both internally and from suppliers.
- Develop processes and procedures for using inspection equipment and tools.
- Recommend and specify instrumentation, calibration and gauging needs.
- Coordinate quality control objectives and activities to resolve production problems, maximize product reliability, and minimize cost.
- Recommend methods for improving utilization of quality assurance personnel, tools and materials.
- Communicate with management and user personnel to assist in the development of production and design standards.
- Review engineering specifications, orders, and related information to obtain knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures, and activities.
- Confer with suppliers, staff, and management personnel regarding purchases, procedures, product specifications, manufacturing capabilities, and project status.
- Assist in development of NDT procedures. Monitor status of program and training requirements.
- Plan and establish sequence of operations to fabricate and assemble parts or products and to promote efficient utilization.
- Perform internal audits.
- Develop gauge R&R studies.
Required Skill Set:
- 2-3 years experience in a quality engineering role in a manufacturing environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
- Must show evidence of the ability to identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
- Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Willing to lead, take charge, and offer opinions and direction.
- Knowledgeable in machining processes.
- Results oriented.
- Demonstrated ability with performing process capability studies, FMEAs, gage R&Rs and in-process control plans.
- Experience with ISO procedures and auditing.
- Must be able to convey technical information effectively to other group members.
- Must be a team player and possess active listening skills by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Knowledgeable in the use of Brown & Sharpe CMM.
- Experienced with the use of calipers, plug & thread gages, micrometers and other measurement devices.
Other Desired Skills:
- NDT experience. Level II or III certification a plus.
- Certified Quality Auditor
- Use of Minitab or other statistical software package.
- Working knowledge of Autodesk AutoCAD. Pro E a plus.
- Exposure to CNC software
